So how do you digitally transform?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"eplus-KY2MZP\"><strong>The seven steps of digital transformation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-v6gux1\">Recently, we started a mini-series on digital transformation (link), identifying seven major parts of digital transformation:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"eplus-1AJbeP wp-block-list eplus-styles-uid-15256c\"><li><a href=\"\/blog\/business\/data-is-the-new-oil-for-software-development-teams\">Data and analytics<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"\/blog\/business\/customer-experience-is-more-important-than-brand-how-do-you-make-sure-you-do-it-right\">Customer experience<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"\/blog\/business\/where-should-innovation-reside-in-your-organization\">Innovation<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><li><a href=\"\/blog\/business\/tech-stack-strategies-for-digital-transformation\">Tech Stack<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"\/blog\/business\/microservices-as-a-crucial-component-of-digital-transformation\">Upgraded systems\/processes<\/a><\/li><li>Up-skilling and reskilling<\/li><li>Leadership and culture<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-QmKftQ\">In this post we\u2019re going to discuss upskilling and reskilling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-RR3i8I wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do those upskilling and reskilling terms mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-6443N7\">They refer to the development of new skills by your team. As your business changes -- whether it\u2019s a smaller change like embracing the cloud or a bigger change like a completely new strategy -- your people need to change with it, or the change won\u2019t go very well (typically). Many companies over the past decade have claimed they were entering a \u201cdigital transformation\u201d period, but not given their people the new skills and terminology to succeed in a digitally-driven environment. As such, we refer to the redevelopment of employee skill sets as \u201cupskilling\u201d or \u201creskilling,\u201d or even more conventionally \u201cre-training.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-tMOxt2 wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do these efforts at retraining tend to work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-tQqbhO\">Unfortunately, no.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-HsukJP\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>&nbsp;has piped up on&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/retraining-programs-fall-short-for-some-workers-11546088401\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how the programs \u201cfall short.\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;When former USA Presidential candidate Andrew Yang appeared on the Joe Rogan podcast, he said that in independent studies, the success rate is about 0-15%, on average.&nbsp;<em>The Atlantic&nbsp;<\/em>magazine has said worker retraining or reskilling is&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/education\/archive\/2018\/01\/the-false-promises-of-worker-retraining\/549398\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a \u201cfalse promise.\u2019<\/a>&nbsp;There are concerns, too, that a lack of new worker skills will leave many current employees susceptible to losing jobs to automation. And&nbsp;<em>The New York Times&nbsp;<\/em>has mentioned the inherent paradox: many people are unemployed globally right now, or want a better job -- but&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/23\/magazine\/retraining-jobs-unemployment.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employers claim they have many roles they can\u2019t fill<\/a>. A lot of that is tied to a lack of skill development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-sHbsGQ wp-block-heading\"><strong>What could this mean for your business?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-nJPu0Q\">If you don\u2019t have the right people, with the right skills, you cannot grow and innovate. But if your attempts at retraining or reskilling those people only have a 10-15% chance of success, you need another plan to get the skills in-house that you need to grow your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-e1N8C5 wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the most common option?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-svYN6Y\">Outsource the skills and function you need. That way, what you\u2019re doing is essentially purchasing a team that already has&nbsp;<a href=\"\/expertise\">pre-existing expertise and skills.<\/a>&nbsp;You don\u2019t need to worry about retraining them, because they\u2019re already trained and have worked on similar projects in similar industries. It\u2019s a much smaller gamble than hiring in-house and trying to constantly retrain when revenue needs are shifting. And if you find an outsourcing partner using a&nbsp;<a href=\"\/about\/team-extension-model\">team extension model<\/a>, where the outsourced team folds into the existing team, even better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-dXeAxo\">The lack of skill development + the availability of outsourcing is one reason why you see outsourcing markets grow so quickly in recent years. The BPO market, for example, is expected&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20201027005703\/en\/Business-Process-Outsourcing-Market-Analysis-Highlights-the-Impact-of-COVID-19-2020-2024-Focus-on-Reducing-Operational-Costs-to-Boost-Market-Growth-Technavio\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to grow $76 billion USD in the next four years<\/a>. That\u2019s partially transactional -- contact centers, etc. -- but partially because businesses need access to skills and can\u2019t find or develop them, so they go to where the skilled people are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-DOQa77 wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do you find an outsourced software development team?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-mcWz7V\">Outsourcing has challenges and risks too, though -- if you get the wrong partner -- so you need to know what you\u2019re looking for.
