How rapid application development platform in combination with agile methodologies saved 2 years in development

Epilog was looking for additional knowledge and experience that will complement and modernize its products and solutions.
Quick links

The Brief

Epilog, an international company that ensures orderly, efficient and reliable logistics through process digitalisation and automatization. 30 years ago they invented a solution for the automatization of internal WMS (Warehouse Management system) logistics processes and today, they are a proud carrier of a big WMS system that has more than 130 installations on 5 continents.

Their guiding light has always been quality, not speed. Market has recognized that quality, but modern technologies bring new players to the market, and these guys are focused on speed. Because of such market deviations, new challenges occurred. Their solutions were becoming old fashion and too slow for the new market expectations. That is where we stepped in, as a partner in their own modernization.

With new requirements, challenges, opportunities, rapid technology development we looked for additional knowledge and experience outside, to complement and modernize our products & solutions to deliver best possible customer experience. We have found Serengeti, a team, which consists of highly knowledgeable and reliable individuals who are always ready for any challenge at any time.”,

Requirements

Our client needed a partner who can do the following:

  • Consulting on the technologies
  • Optimize project organization according to the agile methodology practices
  • Optimize architecture design
  • Take care of the database
  • Make a system cloud-native (flexible and scalable)
  • User friendly UI/UX

On top of that, there was a need for speed – a time issue. While we were discussing the scope of the project, we proposed to do modernization that will be based on RAD platform.

Solution

To prove the speed of RAD platform and to briefly explain to our Client how it works and why they will benefit if they choose this path, we created a complete infrastructure with all environments, predefined modules and concrete modules and screens.. It took us 5 working days to develop this.  We chose few operational processes and created a demo for each. This demo was a small version of some parts of their WMS solution. Our Client preferred to have their people working on the project. However, their developers’ knowledge was scarce on topics such as Agile and SCRUM. We noticed that there was room for improvement, so we offered our consulting services, also known as WARP stack.

Our experts helped to identify which roles were a must have, which ones were missing, and defined scope of work for each role. Of course, this was about Product Manager, Project Manager, Architecture Design, DevOps, Scrum Master, and Developers. We blended with the client and the difference among us was unnoticeable.

1 week: Took us for a fully working initial platform and infrastructure setup

5 environments (AWS with Kubernetes)

CI/CD established on JIRA tool chain

Specification/documentation first principle

Scrum agile development introduction

Mixed development team

Development on RAD platform

On track development

Development cycle reduced by 2 years

Epilog used our modules for users, organization notification, e-mail and product lifecycle management.
